Warbird Information Exchange

A U.S. Air Force F-16 assigned to the 149th Fighter Wing, Texas Air National Guard, painted with World War II heritage markings is parked outside the Air National Guard Paint Facility in Sioux City, Iowa on May 26, 2017. The 149th FW received authorization for the nonstandard markings in order to commemorate the United States Air Force 70th Anniversary. The markings represent the lineage of the 149th FW with the unit’s origins dating back to the 396th Fighter Squadron “Thunder Bums” P-47 paint scheme from 1944.

I wonder if this marks a trend for the AF/ANG in allowing more special paint schemes.

European air forces have been doing them for years to mark participation in exercises and often unit anniversaries.
The USAF, not so much other than gunnery meet nose art and bicentennial markings in the 70s.

Hopefully, we'll see more.

How's that for eye-catching? Very cool!

For the centenary of US naval aviation the USN had a bunch of very cool, very different commemorative schemes. As it's the USAF's 70th anniversary year it certainly would be cool to see them do the same.
