I've got a couple of questions to ask in regards to The Goodyear Built FG-1 Corsairs service in WWII:

When and where did they first enter combat?

Did any pilots become aces strictly on FG's ?

What were the basic color scheme on the first ones in service?

Why are there so many more FG-1's than Vought built F4U's still around today?
Is that due to perhaps to the higher percentage of FG's being assigned for use in post-war Reserve units?

Any takers?

Thanks.
Blue skies,
Jerry

Here's some info., not all that you aked for.

The first FG-1's built would probable have had the Standard Three Tone paint scheme.

The first flight of an FG-1 was Feb. 25, 1943.
Goodyear delivers two FG-1 Corsairs to the Navy in April 43 & seven May 43.
As of Dec. 31, 1943 Goodyear has produced 377 Corsairs.
Dec. 3,1944 Sixty-six of the fixed wing FG-1 Corsairs arrive at Tacloban airfield in Leyte from Emirau with nine more the next day.
Dec. 31,1944 Goodyear has produced 2108 in 1944.
Sept. 1945, Goodyear Corsair production is stopped.

Regards,
Mike

Here's a bit from the NTSB incident database regarding an FG-1. I found it a while back while researching accidents near my home. Definitely a sad end for a Corsair. Pay special attention to the pilot's BAC. I'm amazed he could stand, let alone fly.

I wonder what the history was on that bird?

Chico,

Interesting info on the FG-1D Corsair crash at Ann Arbor Airport. According to the first edition (1989) of the Warbirds Worldwide Directory by John Chapman & Geoff Goodall, N9153Z was FG-1D BuNo 88367. The owner was R.W. Gilbert of Phoenix, AZ. It is listed as crashed in 1969. Interestingly, N9153Z is currently registered to a Mooney!

For a crash close to Willow Run, see: http://www.check-six.com/Coast_Guard/Fu ... _Storm.htm

Funny. From the sounds of this incident, I doubt there was much left of the FG-1 to put back into flying shape and crash again. Maybe there's a discrepancy in the book?

The pilot would have been in his twenty's during the war. I wonder if he had flying time in the service?

Wonder if the owner knows?

By a twist of fate I found a picture of 88367 while sorting throught stuff at home the other day. It's dated May 1960 and it wears old NY reserve markings.
I scanned it at work but can't convert it to a jpeg and post it.
I can send it to someone though and they can 8)
