F4U-folks:

Good day!

Does anyone has other angles of this F4U Corsair?? Is it a -4 or a -5??

p.s The caption said a Navy CC was taking it for a spin during an acceptance flight. Poss taken at Bridgeport CT area. c. 1950s!! AEC via Mark Allen.

It's definitely a -5, judging by the chin air intakes. It's not been winterized either (no de-icing boots). It looks brand new, and I suspect it's a prototype. How odd that it has two pitot tubes too; one on each wing.

XF4U-5

Two F4U-4's (BuNo. 97296 & 97364) and an F4U-4B (BuNo.97415) were modified as trial aircraft for the -5 mods. The plane in the photo began life as either BuNo. 97296 or BuNo. 97364.

Rob/Richard:

Interesting details of a poss F4U-Test aircraft! Tks .So we are looking at a -4 with -5 engine cowling panels! Would luv to see the tail close-ups of those -5 test aircraft.

p.s In addition, F4U-4s Buno 97361 & 80764 were also used as test bed/ mods for the F4U-5N upcoming models!! c. Aug 1946. Anyone with access to the files of NATC Patuxent River NAS F4U-5/N aircraft Test aircraft files welcome aboard also!!

Beautiful photo but definitely not c. 1942, more like 1944-45 me thinks.

Your photo was definitely taken in Stratford. the blast fence and the old hanger roof in the background give it away.

Hey lookie - it looks like the Red Bull Corsair (#995). The only thing wrong is the snow. BuNo.96995 was accepted by the US Navy in August 1945. The only other F4U-4 this could be is BuNo.80995, which was born around January 1945, but it would have had the early style rounded windscreen. It's hard to tell, but the plane in the photo looks like it has the later version (flat) windscreen, which would make it part of the "96xxx - 97xxx" series F4U-4's.

....good observation/detail!! I'll look in a higher resolution for the cockpit screen details. It may be Buno 96995 with a bit of snow in the Stratford, CT area!! -)

That's my best guess as well Mike. There's no way that's an August snow, even in Connecticut! I presume that the flat windscreen I think I see is just an illusion. I'd love to see a higher resolution version of the photo, if anyone has one. 8)

The H/resolution pic shows #854 & 874 with a flat screen at the front of the cockpit cabin. #995 appears to be the same also.

p.s Unfortunately the photo was not dated for a better ID of the fleet. They are all seem to be F4U-4s. Maybe Mike can upload a larger version. My imageshack has size limitations.
