F6F Hellcat BuNo's/Construction Numbers

Wed Jun 26, 2019 12:24 pm

I'm looking for a sort of peer review, and wondering if anyone can refute this information I've compiled for Hellcat BuNo's-to-Grumman construction numbers? I've been able to confirm through evidence in existing data plates and the WIX registry that all but two of these BuNo-C/N ranges should be true, and the two I haven't been able to confirm are based on the most likely case. With regard to the three prototypes included as well, the construction numbers are deduced based on the other C/N ranges. Note that the 65890-66244 BuNo range seems out of order, though it is in the right order for the construction numbers.

F6F-3 BuNo.04775 through 04958 (C/N A-01 through A-184) ~ not confirmed, but the most likely
F6F-3 BuNo.08798 through 09047 (C/N A-185 through A-434)
F6F-3 BuNo.25721 through 26195 (C/N A-435 through A-909)
F6F-3 BuNo.65890 through 66243 (C/N A-910 through A-1263)
XF6F-2 BuNo.66244 (C/N A-1264)
F6F-3 BuNo.39999 through 43137 (C/N A-1265 through A-4403)
F6F-5 BuNo.58000 through 58999 (C/N A-4404 through A-5403)
F6F-5 BuNo.69992 through 70187 (C/N A-5404 through A-5599)
XF6F-6 BuNo. 70188 (C/N A-5600)
F6F-5 BuNo.70189 through 70912 (C/N A-5601 through A-6324)
XF6F-6 BuNo.70913 (C/N A-6325)
F6F-5 BuNo.70914 through 72991 (C/N A-6326 through A-8403) ~ not confirmed, but the most likely
F6F-5 BuNo.77259 through 80258 (C/N A-8404 through A-11403)
F6F-5 BuNo.93652 through 94751 (C/N A-11404 through A-12503)

Nice. Once you get this ironed out mind if I use it as the basis for the Hellcat section of Forgotten Props?

Yes, if this is all substantiated, have at it Scott. The BuNo ranges come from Joe Baugher's site, and the C/N ranges are deduced from about 30 different known Hellcat construction numbers. Geoff Goodall's limited list of Grumman Hellcats falls in line with all of this as well: http://www.goodall.com.au/warbirds-dire ... rumman.pdf

It would be great if there was something absolutely concrete, in the form of documentation from Grumman or the Navy that listed this all out with the construction numbers included.
