There is a general discussion of aviation museums in Europe on another thread.

CNN has just put up a page titled "An aviation museum for people who don't care about aviation," about the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. The title is appropriate. That museum has both a very fine collection - one of the best in the world - and a very fine display (the two facets are worth separate consideration).

One of the issues is that a better display often means more room between exhibits and thus less aircraft. This is better for the general audience but perhaps not so appealing to us aerophiles who miss important aircraft that are in storage (the Ottawa collection includes very substantial WWI holdings, many of which are now in storage).

I think the "hacked up" aircraft in question is the Northrop Delta, which has been subject to some discussion in the vintage thread:

http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=39086

This aircraft crashed in Canada with the two people on board being the first Canadian casualties of WWII. The wreck was found many years later, and will not be restored.

IIRC, because the rest of the parts (wings, etc.) were "lost" en route to the museum  .

As a pilot at Vintage Wings of Canada since 2005, my reactions are a bit jaded. We flew aircraft over there to the CASM at Rockcliffe more times than I can count. I personally have flow a P-40, Tiger Moth, Fox Moth, Waco Taperwing, over there to support their events, and my family built the only proper Hucks Starter in North America which was used to start their Hind.

I never saw evidence that they did a single thing to reciprocate. They just took.

These days we try not to land. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9FY0GMhhHk&t=7s

Or if we do, we go to the other side of the field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vOSG2aDuOc
