Hi Mike,

I've never quite bought the Air Force caption on that "black" P-51 image - I suspect the color information was an interpretation by one of our accessions folks. The aircraft has been completely smoothed to minimize drag, possibly for Wright Field tests, though I've never found any such test reports. In the original image I think I can detect a faint Neutral Gray demarcation, though OD/Neutral Gray was also considered a night fighter scheme in late 1944.

Cheers,

Dana
