Handles on Avengers

Sat Apr 24, 2021 12:03 pm

I've been doing research on Avengers lately, and I've noticed many photographs of Avengers in Royal Canadian Navy service with handles on the right side of the fuselage one below the front cockpit canopy and one below the rear canopy as shown below:

I've never seen photos of an Avenger in US military service with those two handles. Were they perhaps added as part of the conversion to Canadian service?

Any thoughts?

What is the "Can" looking item on the tail appendage?

The “Can” is apparently an antenna for the AN/APD 501 SHF DF Receiver used to detect radar emissions from Soviet submarines. There is detailed information on these links.

Thank you for the explanation and awesome links.......I see in one of the pictures (Of the same style antenna installed in the front) they referred to it as the "Soup Pot" antenna. Booked marked the links for complete reading, again thank you for the answer and links.

Sort of a related question.

When Fairey Aviation Canada did their conversions on Avengers - was there a data plate place on the aircraft any place? Was the original US Navy data plate retained?

Another question for the group. I've highlighted an access panel to the bomb bay. I've seen several restored avengers with these but all served in the RCN. Since the smaller photo is a photo of an RCN avenger - I assume they were added by the RCN. The question is - what were they used for? It's a pretty big door and it appears to have replaced the rear bomb hoist door on the bomb bay. Thoughts as to what it is and whether it is Canadian in origin?

I think those Hartwell Trigger Lock Latches are post-war.

That is the access door to the Maple Syrup tank. Used for smoke screens... :axe:
