Hello all,

I recently read that the Ilyushin Il-2 at the Flying Heritage Museum was flown with a "reversed" Allison V-1710 powerplant, just like the original. So excuse my ignorance:

What is a "reversed" powerplant?
How was this done?
Why was it done this way?
Any other airplanes use this idea?

Enquiring minds need to know...

I assume it was done that way to match the rotation of the original engine.

The Allison has a great feature in that converting it from counterclockwise to clockwise rotation only requires the substitution of a few parts - notably the cam, although I'm sure there are timing issues that have to be addressed with the Mag's and probably a few other minor bits and pieces.

Remember, the P-38 used one left handed and one right handed Allison, so it has been done a buncha times before.
