Warbird Information Exchange

Mid summer 2005 i started getting better equitment to photograph aviation.
I purchased a Canon Rebel XT with the 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens. Later that summer after more research I decided to purchase a Canon 100-400mm IS lens ( which I will never regret ).
Know I want a better walkaround lens to replace the 18-55 and 55-200mm ( Cheapy lenses ).
I can't decide between the Canon 24-70 F2.8 L USM or the newer 24-105 F4 IS, I have heard some complaints with the 24-105, but not sure if that was just the first batches produced.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the 28-135 mm IS and very much like it. It gives you the flexibility of your "walk around" lens with some zoom.

I have an early Canon Rebel G and have also upgraded the lenses that I use.
I too purchased the Canon 100-400mm IS lens (many years ago) and it has been an awesome lens! For my small, 'walkaround' lens, I was still using the original Canon 28-80mm lens that came with the camera body and found that there was a large gap between where the 28-80's 80mm lens ended and the 100-400mm IS's 100mm lens started. Big gap!

The remedy came to light with the 28-135mm IS lens!
I bought the 28-135mm IS when it first came out and it is the perfect companion lens to the 100-400mm IS lens. I wholeheartedly recommend getting the 28-135mm IS lens. The 28mm low end has proven to give enough wide-angle lens capability for most uses and the top end 135mm is enough of an overlap with the 100-400m IS lens to keep me from having to continually swap lenses to get shots that fall in that 80mm-120mm range requirement.

In summary: Get the 28-135mm IS lens!

I have both the 24-105IS F4 L and the 28-135IS lenses. The 28-135IS is probably your best bet for a walking around lens... especially with the 1.6x mag. factor of the rebel XT. I like the other lens, but it is not really worth 3 x the price of the L lens... I have had some focusing issues with it, which I am not too happy with. I wpuldn't bother with the 2.8 lens unless they come out with an image stabilized version. The IS makes a HUGE difference in picture quality, especially for air-to-air shots.

PS throw those other lenses you originally got with the camera away... they are utter crap, and you will really regret having used them in years to come when you want to look back at some nice sharp images from the mid-2000's!

I have the Canon 20D and a Canon 100-400 IS lens (which I love), a Canon 10-22 wide angle (which I REALLY love), a Canon 35-80, and a Canon
2X II extender. I have a very understanding and (and strong) wife who helps me schlep all this stuff around. There's not much that these can't handle.
For some reason, I don't get the great shots that some of the troops here do, but they've also been doing it longer than I have.

Mudge the well equipped
(Does that sound right?)

It sounds just fine as long as you don't start talking about how long your lens is!
