Can someone please explain how the shotgun shell starting system works in planes like the Corsair and Hellcat.
I have seen a few demos in training films but it's mostly inserting the shell and closing the breach. I would like to know what happens internally.

Thanks
Eric

I don't want this to seem like I am trying to hijack the thread, but can anyone give me a idea on where I might be able to purchase a Coffman Starter cartridge for my collection? I saw one several years ago and have always wanted to find one. Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help me.

Check out pages 168-169 of Graham White's Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of World War II for more info on the Coffman starter and three drawings and diagrams, including an exploded view.

The book also has some good general basic info on WWII-era engine issues such as mounts, cooling, ignition systems and a section on the GE turbosuperchargers.
