B-17 question

Tue May 23, 2006 12:45 pm

Does anyone out there know anything about a B-17 named "Chalk Up"??

Does some museum (it's NOT in the CAF nose art collection) have its nose art on display, either real or replica? I'm trying to help a WWII vet who has asked about it.

I just has a look in the B-17 Nose Art Name Directory ~ by Wallace R. Forman ..... there is only one B-17 listed with that name and that was with the 305th Bomb Group, ( Squadron not known ) the serial number was 43-39193 and no image was known to exist when the book was published back in the mid 1990s

So then I looked on google for the 305th BG ~ and found

http://www.8thafhs.org/bomber/305bg.htm

This page has a link for a B-17 message board ........

Good hunting !

I'm trying to help a warbird group answer a letter that he sent to them so I don't have direct contact with the individual. I'll see what I can find out. I do know that he's 90 and was a bombardier on a B-17 with this name.

Thanks, Peter! That's a big help. I'll contact the Eighth AF Museum.

BTW, that message board has been hacked in a big way and REALLY needs someone to clean it up. What a mess.

I found this in Roger Freemans book, The B-17 Flying Fortess Story,

43-39193 delivered Lincoln 12/30/44; Dow Fd 1/25/45; assigned 366BS/305BG Chelveston 2/13/45/; re-ass 10HBS Oberpfaffenhofen 4/30/47; Recl Comp 11/19/47 "Chalk Up"

Try these as well.
