Does anyone have access to actual pictures of its discovery and condition? I've seen plenty of the P-38 recovered, but have only seen a very grainy b/w photograph of the B-17E under the ice. I heard it was basically a pile of scrap metal but also heard that many items were salvaged, like the Sperry upper turret. Anyway, if anyone has any photos of this bird under the ice I would be much obliged to see them.

try the book published in the 90's covering the recovery effort. recovery team member's snapped pics over the top turret, the 1 guy mugging for the camera w/ flight helmet & goggles tragically died during the expedition.

Tom, I think you have your expeditions confused. Nobody died, or was even seriously hurt during any of the Lost Squadron expeditions.

Chuck,

Any updates on the Labradore lake B-17 that is being restored down in GA? Any ideas of what B-17 the plane might be displayed as?

There was also a show on TLC on the recovery. Great show. I have the book as well. I remember giving them a couple dollars in the 80s when I was a kid at the Mt Comfort IN airshow.

How's that? The recovery wasn't until 1992. Was this a pre expedition donation? Thanks

They had been attempting recoveries since the early 80's.
