Just saw on the news this morning that the USS Intrepid will be "sailing" from its pier in NYC to Bayonne, NJ for some renovations. The work is expected to be done in 08. The pier it is docked too will also be repaired.

Here is a link. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/06/nyreg ... repid.html

I wonder if it will look like an Aircraft Carrier when they are done?

I am glad to hear they plan to open up some more of the ship for touring. I hope that they keep it some what original in looks. I was a bit disappointed so much of the ship was closed when I was there several years ago.

Maybe it is time to make a run down before it closes for the season.

I was there years ago. I dont remember much it has been so long.

I do remember seeing two aircraft being lifted off the deck by Chinooks though on their way to get restored, that was a wild sight!

That's money well spent. Glad to also hear that they will open up more of her to see. The Midway is the same as far as not that many places to go under deck.

That's what I like about the Yorktown in Charleston, SC. A large portion of the ship is open to tours, and the interior is, with the exception of the displays, in the same condition as it was when it was moored there in the 70's. They are completing a renovation of the flight deck, and have done some work on the hangar deck.

I just hope we get a heads-up on when the move will be. I have a good view from my office window and will want to get some shots of the old girl in mid river. If anyone learns of the date in advance, please post here.

I actually got a better look at the inside of the Intrepid at a corporate party, for which they rent out a large area of the hangar deck, than on any of my visits as part of the paying public.

Lexington has a large portion open to the public. You have free run of most of the ship when you do the overnite liveaboard program.

According to the article they mention Nov.4 or Nov.11 as the possible move dates. :)

greetings tim,

Yes I share your thoughts on the intrepid... I hope they open up more
of the ship as well... I too was there a couple years ago and for such a
wonderful tribute and piece of history, I came away very disappointed
in how much of the ship you could actually see. I was very impressed
with what they've done with the hornet in alameda, CA and would like
to get to see the lex one of these days...

anyway, lets hope they open the intrepid up a little more and put some
efforts into keeping it historically accurate!

hh
