Any WIXers know of any interesting warbird things to do in the Destin area? The wife and kids are at the beach and unless I'm surf fishing, I have little use for it. Any good airports to bum around? Thanks,

Albert, ride on over to NAS Pensacola & go to the Museum Of Naval Aviation. Plan to give yourself some time, as there is a lot to see. :D

Albert,

I hope you and the family are enjoying yourselves down in Florida! After looking at the national weather map this morning it looks like it'll be about 15 - 20 degrees cooler in Florida than in the upper midwest.

Have a great one and I wish I was down there with you!!!!

John

Albert, almost forgot, right there next door in Fort Walton, at Eglin Air Force Base is also a pretty good museum. I believe it is called The Air Force Armament Museum. Have a good time.

Don't miss the Armaments Museum at Eglin AFB at Ft Walton Beach, down the road is the display at the front of Hurlburt AFB, special ops stuff, AC-119, AC130, AC-47, A-26K, OV-10, etc... All is on the road to Pensacola NAS.

During August 2002, I visited the Eglin exhibit as well as the Navy Museum at Pensacola, and the USS Alabama across the bay, in Mobile.

These are just three -bad quality- shots from that trip. Al, you will enjoy Eglin and Pensacola, if you have not been there before.

Albert..Hi-jack alert!!

Tulio, your photo of the Helio Courier is a timely one, as the Courier is what
I thought would be a fitting answer to FFields parameters for the WIX warbird. Maybe a bit top o' the heap...but
she's one you don't see often and can certainly make an entrance..or exit!

Sorry..back to you Albert, hope the guys have given you plenty of to-do's.

If you do manage to get over to the Air Commando Air Park please get some picts. I believe I read some of the aircraft had been damaged during the hurricanes a few years back (not last year). I wonder if they have been repaired and put back on display.

As for Destin that area is great for the family and certainly for airplane buffs. As mentioned by others it is easy and quick to get to the museums from the one at Eglin to the USS Alabama (which had their aircraft pavilion demolished by a hurricane).

Not sure what it takes to get in, but the US Army Aviation Museum or something like that is at Ft. Rucker. Probably about as far from Destin as PCola is.

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to get over to the Armaments Museum today but nothing is falling into place. A pair of T-6/SNJs made a nice pass down the beach late yesterday. Wondered over to the Destin A/P and had a few moments to walk around an AN-2, plus Mi-8, and Mi-24 helicopters. Destin looks like a fun airport.
