Warbird Information Exchange

A couple of years ago two or three P-47s were dug out of the ground in New Guinea (I think it was in New Guinea). They were found because there was a P-40 wing sticking out of the dirt that apparently had a fuselage attached to it. I've seen pics of the P-47s but I've yet to see a picture of the Warhawk wreckage. Anybody got one?

I always understood that the wing sticking vertically from the ground was that of one of the P-47's eventually recovered.

Of course I could be wrong.

The PNG folks probably wanted to leave it in the dirt to preserve their rich WW2 tourism economy.

Actually, the description and story details are about 90% correct.
All of the items have ended up in the US with several owners.

Well Dan you were correct it was a P40 wing sticking out of the ground in PNG. Theaircraft was recovered to Australia and it's restoration is well advanced and looking sensational.

quick question about this thread. Just exactly how many aircraft did they recover ? I had heard it was something like one P-40 and three P-47's, all Razorback models. Was that it or were there any other excavations that brought any other aircraft out of the ground ?

Also, where are the P-47's at today ?
