WWII Performance evaluations and Original Encounter Reports

Loads of super technical evaluations here - the few hundred scans of the original (signed) "P-51 Encounter Reports" are very, very interesting. There's enough paintings in those encounter reports to keep me busy for a LONG time!

90" at part throttle at sea level for the P-51H.
Yikes! I've never even SEEN a manifold pressure gauge that registers above 60".I guess that I've lead a sheltered life.

I thought I read somewhere that "super-mustangs" at Reno push into the 80's, I only know 36 Inches in the T-6 :)

I have heard and read of the Reno guys pulling 140"Hg @ 3600 RPM on Merlins. Only major problems are keeping induction temp down and therefore preventing detonation and bearing material extruding out and seizing on the crankshaft. (The Hand Grenade Aspect!!!!!) As much as I can't condone the blowing up and wastage of these engines, there is nothing like sound of a racing Merlin coming up the valley at Reno! That said, if it wasn't for the the racing guys overhauling and keeping these engines alive, I would bet there would be far fewer surviving now.
