Ok, now that might have got your attention!

Here is some lengthy, very good reading from Bud Davisson on his experience with Junior Burchinal in the early 70's.

I landed a Stearman at Flying Tigers in 1982, while Junior was doing time, walked around looking at the remaining accumulation of planes and parts, had lunch at the truck stop, met Junior's son, it was exactly as Budd described it.

An amazing story written with skill by Bud so that you get the flavor as well as the facts. In 1970 I had a fresh degree from U of Texas, and was wasting my time in Nixon's war as a mechanic in the Texas ANG at Laporte near Houston. I was a few years away from being a pilot, but interested in airplanes, after seeing my first airshow at the great Andreau Airport in Houston, now sadly closed by greedheads. Paris, north of Dallas would have been about a 4 hour drive. I'd since heard of Junior, but not in this detail. If he landed all this stuff on a 2700 by 30 runway he must have been real good. The shortest I have been in my Spit is 2900 and I used most of that. The Ft. Collins runway where I go for service is 44 wide and I do concentrate there! Is he still alive?

It went through a series of owners until it was donated to the Collings Foundation in Dec. 2000.

Jr. also flew his B-17 and of course the infamous P-38 off of that strip. The 38 is the one he overran the runway with and ran over the car and trailer that was going down the road. Fortunately I don't think anyone was hurt seriously.
