Hi,

The F4U-4 have 2 engines during it's life, the Pratt & Whtiney R-2800-18W and -42W.

But when the -42W are installed on the aircraft?
I found on the R-2800 book, that -42W are for the F4U-4B and note produce in large quantity.

This is for this aircraf Bu.97286t:

in my records it says that the F4U-4 was the last version built during the war; 40 a/c completed before the end of the war - the R-2800-42W was installed from the 1'000th production aircraft.

Vought built 1912 F4U-4's before VJ Day. Goodyear had FG-4's on the production line when the war ended, these were scrapped.

F4U-4B BuNo 97486 and later, built after August 16, 1945 were built with the -42W engine.

The first production F4U-4 flew on Sept 20, 1944 and was accepted by the Navy in Oct. 1944. The F4U-4 flew into combat for the first time on April 7, 1945 from the escort carriers USS Sitkoh Bay and USS Breton. Operational F4U-4's reached Okinawa in May 45.

The F4U-4 had 6 .50 cal. machine guns the F4U-4B had 4 20mm cannons. There was no -4A

Regards,
Mike

F4U-4 97286, ( the aircraft in the photograph), owned by Kermit Weeks and on display at Fantasy of Flight in Polk City , Florida, was delivered with an R-2800-18W engine. Connecticut Corsair is restoring to flight a sister ship of this aircraft, 97330, also delivered with an R-2800-18W engine. Both aircraft are former Bob Bean Corsairs. For a technical description of the R-2800, I suggest Graham White's book on the R-2800, and his book on allied aircraft piston engines of WWII. Hi,

Thanks a lot for your help.

I have the book from Graham White and it's the best reference for me about R-2800.
