Warbird Information Exchange

Uhhh...I'm guessing this isn't supposed to happen. Found it on Usenet (alt.binaries.pictures.aviation) and would sure like to know the story on it.

That was a new water temperature probe they had installed on the early jets. The probe worked well, but testing ceased after mutlitple complaints from the pilots.

The sad part is that I can almost believe that

Actually, the photo was taken near PAX River in the Mid-50's.
They were experimenting with the Vertical Landing capibilites of front line fighters.
This was the one and only successful "Vertical Trap". The wires were hung about 250 off the water and the jet was to make a vertical dive and catch the No. 3 wire.
As you can see, there was no "wave off" options, so the navy abandoned the project.

If you look very closely you can read the tag under the BuNO:

Machine wash cold with like colors / airframes. Line dry. Cool iron if needed. Made in the USA.

They're just hanging it out with the rest of the laundry. Any good crew chief will tell you that it leaves the airframes smelling "springtime fresh" year round, and the sea mist means you don't have to use fabric softner.
