Going back to one of the other threads... how can you leave WWII aircraft outside like that?

I'm afriad they leave the airraft outside because they own them.
It's their ball and they can do what they want with them.

Unfortnunately, WE, as the American Public, actually own them and have the right to put some pressure on displays like this.
That or give them millions in donations to build buildings are the only things that will get those birds under cover.

Yeah I used to go check them out when I went to school up there. Awesome aircraft, but it was heartbreaking to walk up to one and see the control surfaces all rotted out. They would normally keep the P-51 up really well, simply because it would be towed out as a background for USAF graduations.

Haven't been there in over a year, but last I heard it was open.

Ecologically sound in my opinion. They slowly return to nature and provide habitats for the indigenous species of birds.

Makes as much sense as sinking a perfectly good ship to create an artificial reef. If I sunk my boat out there, guess what would happen to me?

The sign for the F-84 mentions that the type saw limited service in the Vietnam War - is this correct? What kind of operations was it used for?

Whats going on with the 24's engine cowls removed?

My girlfriend works on base and I've been driving by those planes for 15 years. I can't recall ever seeing the B-24 with engine cowlings in place. Unless someone donates a set, I doubt any will ever be mounted. The museum has a very small budget from what I understand.

Anyone know of a spare set lying around somewhere that could be donated (tax write off)? It'd sure be nice to see those accessory bay's closed up!

The P-51 looks great externally, but is essentially gutted inside. As for the bigger bombers, there's lots of chicken wire to keep the local birds out, etc. There is occasionally some scaffolding around one of the planes, so the occasional maintenance does get done.
