1 of our new f-22 raptors recently had a canopy glitch that trapped the pilot for 5 hours. firemen had to cut the canopy to free him. total damage 1.28 million dollars. your tax dollars....... :toimonster: :vom:

Very old news. Things like this are going to happen in an aircraft that has just recently gone into service.
still happens in other aircraft(f-15, -16)

The official release from the AF said it was cheaper than blowing the canopy.

Maybe you guys should start throwing a protest about the F-14...after all, the prototype crashed on its first flight, "wasting" about $15 million. How about that F-117...both the prototypes crashed!! A couple of the production airplanes packed it in when the flight control computers died, too! What a turkey! Both airplanes must be a total waste of money if you ask me.

By the way...before you guys start having an aneurysm about the F-22 canopy, the airplane was still under warranty and Lockheed paid for the new canopy.

My brother works with F-22's at Edwards AFB.He sent me a slide show that documents a fire fighting crew cutting the pilot out of the airplane with a chain saw.I'm not smart enough to figure out how to post it on this site, but I did send a copy to Tom Friedman's e-mail as a 1.5 MB attachment. The narrative says that the canopy replacement cost was $182,000+,and there was some peripheral damage, but I think that the million $ plus estimate was far too high.

Reportedly, this instance happened as a result of a "loose screw", something I hope I'll never be accused of having

A little loctite should have cured this problem eh?

Incidentally, we should always bear in mind that bugs WILL crop up in real world testing that can't YET be simulated or programmatically analyzed. We also need to give credit to those who day in and day out, strap themselves into these machines for our benefit despite that fact. 8) 8)
