Mike,
Since we are assigned the CAF's US-2B, we did a good amount of research on the type. I can say that Trackers did fly patrols off the coast of Vietnam while deployed on WESTPAC cruises and there was even one lost, possibly to enemy action. Now, I can not say that there were S-2A's but there were certainly later models and series in the theater. Of course, there were the COD's to bring the much needed mail in the days before e-mail and sta phones.

Did also hear that they flew the aircraft inland and used the madboom to detect metal objects under the jungle canopy.

Yes it is!
He really is amazing with duct tape and foam rubber!
It ran like crap but he was happy. I called him on Sunday as I was bringing our shop van home to move some furniture. I asked him if I should load a nitrogen bottle in while I was going up there. I serviced the tires and accumulators with Nitrogen. He was even happier.
The nose tires are all dry cracked, one had 40 psi in it and the other one was empty. The mains were at around 85 or so. He may run it one more time before packing it up for winter.
