Here's another photo my Dad took while in the USAF in August of 1951.

Image

It's one of two RB-17G's that were stationed at Lages Field in the Azores. He routinely flew missions on them as the Flight Surgeon. Unfortunately , it's the only good photo of the RB-17's that he has.

Does anybody know if one of those droppable boats is still around or preserved somewhere?
Blue skies,

There were some RB-17Gs around at the time, but the air-sea rescue mods were SB-17Gs.

If memory serves me correctly, there used to be a bigger Higgins boat used on the SB-29 displayed at Fairchild AFB, WA, and I've heard rumors that there is at least one SB-17G Higgins boat around but I'm not sure where.

My Dad had "RB-17G" written on the back of his slide.
What would he know, he was a flight surgeon! :D

Did your dad see the B-17 the Portugese impounded there while it was being flown to Israel?
