the engine gauge for this airplane calls for a AN series with 3 1/8 inch opening and mounting holes. The panel is cut for a different size than this.. How is this gauge mounted?

There are two styles of gauge for a Wildcat... the 3 1/8" style and the 2 1/4" style. Both have a standard four hole mounting system which is common to all gauges of their style. Go to Aircraft Spruce for a simple to use template for accurately placing the holes...

No you are talking about the fuel guages. The 3 in 1 engine guage were the normal 3.125" around and latter models had a 3.75" diameter guage with spread out mounting holes.
