We have a couple of NOS P-51, P-38 etc aerials available for sale. They're NOS, with their aluminium covering. Drop me a note if interested.

Well that's odd, because if they aren't, the factory that made them sixty or so years ago got it wrong, because that's what they've marked them up as! It also means that my original copy of the P-51D parts catalogue is also wrong.

Possibly made by a different contractor or are the marked with a dash and a letter after the AN104? AN104-A?
The P-51 AN104 was a hardwood teardrop cross section that tapered to a point. The upper 18" or so was clad with copper sheet and painted silver.
There wasn't any part made from Alum.
I believe I have seen pics of a version that was all metal, not wood based. Might have been a Naval version? So I believe there was a couple different versions.

These are the metal sheath over fibre type, only type I've ever seen, off an aeroplane anyway.

Must apologize if my antenna ID sounded rude. Not my intension. You are correct, the AN104 was used on the D. Per Rich's coments the antenna I have seen used on the Mustang, at least for the ARC-3 radio set, was the AN104-A tapered wood with metal sheath on the top 2/3. The first photo file you sent me is of a different style and I didn't look closely enough at the 2nd photo to see that it was different from the first. It apears to be a little shorter than the AN104-A we have but of a similar shape. I will try to forward photo later.

The "mystery" deepens somewhat. On the sealed boxes each of these came in and on the attached tag was AN-104. However, faintly readable on the aerial itself is AN-74-A. Now, that's one I must confess I've never come across before. Any thoughts?
The aluminium sheath covers a core which appears to be a paxolin type material rathher than wood.
