...and I didn't have much luck!!!

I went out to the airport on Saturday with the hope of viewing many airliners coming in over my head so I could get some practice using my new camera. Unfortunately they were landing most of the flights on a runway you can't get close to. For the others they kept switching between runways and I was almost always in the wrong spot.

In short it was a bad day.

I did get some pictures of an EMB 175. There was also a visiting T-43 (737), which is unusual in Ottawa.

You can go to the photo directly at...

...or go to this page for a link to the album, along with others...

BTW... I was using a Rebel XT with the 28-135 IS lens. The T-43 photo was suffering from back lighting. I guess I should reread that part of the manual, I seem to remember something about being able to deal with the backlighting.

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

Great looking pictures Mike, wish I could do the same for mine. Both my lens and body (digital) leave for Canon this weekend :(

Thanks for the comments guys. I am getting better results than with my old film Camera, I just feel like a fish out of water with all of the automation.

I've got the 100-400L IS and have never been able to get a tack sharp picture with it since I bought it in December (Using the Canon 20D). I had to send it back once already as it started hanging up when I'd zoom with it at around 200mm. I've blamed myself for the crappy pictures, presuming I was shooting to slow, or not sure about the Photoshop hardware for sharpening, noise, etc. Finally after another dissapointing weekend, I went to San Carlos Airport last weekend and shot about 150 pictures of planes taking off in every speed and configuration of settings that I could use. Not one of them was crisp, even shooting up to speeds of (TV) 1000. This included a few jets from SFO.

I've gotten nice results from my smaller lens on air to airs, but nothing good from the big lens. After a lengthy talk with Canon about my issues, they want me to send in both the lens and body. This really sucks as I've got an air to air session this weekend, if the weather holds out, and more for the following two weekends. Looks like it's back to film 'till I get my setup back :(

They should give you at least a loaner body. That sucks. I am looking forward to what they say about it. I want to get the 100-400 myself.

I too asked about a loaner, but they said they weren't in the business to do that. As I sent it yesterday, hopefully I'll have it back by next weekend. Wishful thinking?
