Ships anybody?

Thu Jul 19, 2007 10:16 pm

Not my usual thing, but our SAH group went for a tour of the Mothball Naval Reserve Fleet in Suisan Bay CA last Saturday. I don't know ships, so any corrections or additions are expected :)

Battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) is the main attraction with a group trying to get it brought to Mare Island Shipyards in Vallejo CA as a Museum. More info: www.battleshipiowa.org

To me the second most interesting vessel was the USS Hoga (YT-146), a tugboat that was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on Dec. 7th 1941. While there's a group tring to get it for a museum in Florida, it would be nice if it could return to Ford Island at Pearl Harbor for display.

USS Fort Fisher (LSD 40)

Unknown to me is an old Liner and an Ice Breaker that is USCGC Glacier (WAGB-4)

Another unknown to me, with a 5 inch gun on the back.

The old liner is actually a WWII era sub tender Fulton Class (AS). They served til the early 80s. The ship with the stern 5" looks like a DDG.

Sweet trip man. I love old ships.

Thanks for posting! The ships identified as liberty ships might be victory ships instead.
