Down Aircraft Database?

Not really sure where to post this so I’ll try here

Has anyone heard of folks marking know aircraft wreck sites so during later searches those sites don’t distract the searchers. I ask this because I’ve hiked to several crash sites in the Catskill Mountains of NY and each one had a large amount of yellow paint and some type of lettering on it. At first I figured it was just graffiti but it is the same yellow paint and it has been on every site I’ve been to in the Catskills.

Is this a common practice? But more important… Is there a master list out there of all the sites? Who would keep such a list and how could I get a copy of it?

It's my understanding that when wrecks are found they are marked so that they can be identified from the air. That way if another aircraft should go down in the same general area the older wreck won't be mistaken for the newer one.
