RACV Australia Day Picnic, 2009

Fri Jan 30, 2009 5:25 am

Monday was a very special day. Thanks to the huge array of great things there are to do in Australia (and particularly Melbourne) on Australia Day, we were able to sample a free couple.

First stop was the RACV Australia Day Picnic and Federation Vehicle Display. What that means is something in the order of 500 cars, bikes and trucks of all kinds back to the earliest days. Lots of Americania of great- and no- tasdte, British metal and German, as well as a sprinkling of others.

Even after whittling it down I've got 300 or so pics worth sharing, so I'll post a few at a time mebbe.

First batch.

Someone's preserved a British Leyland car... Gosh. There's nothing so hopeless that someone doesn't love it.

Some by Bev (Mrs JDK)

Nice early Moggie (Morris Minor)

Some MGs and porches
Image

Um...
Image

There were some very nice Bristols there - same company as the aircraft manufacturer, IIRC.
Image

Unfortunately I didn't get a good chance at the 'bikes - there just wasn't time to see everything.

Nice, eh? Hup, hup, Hupmobiles

Immediately after posting I was taken offline by a powercut, which lasted from then until now. Lucky it happened when it was only 30 degrees.

Here's a CMP. There is an adult in it, we think!

Fred Flintstone minds the dash of an Austin aesthetic.

A few more.

There were a few MVs, the CMP, this and the inevitable row of Jeeps.

It's not yours, and your girlfriend's not gonna be impressed. Now get outa my pic.

I keep thinking it needs a periscope.

Not sure if this had three rows of seats or four. Contained about 20 kids.

Series One Landy?

Swedish class.

And there was a classy traffic jam on the way out...

Say the word if you'd like to see more.

More! More!

Most of the steering wheels are on the wrong side!!!!

I saw the reflection of a '35 or '36 Ford in one photo. My mother had a '36 Ford in 1936 in high school.

OK, Another batch.

Some funny Pommie 4WD
Image

Mmmm.

Nice selection of Graham Paiges' there. Notice the mini- Grommitmobile in the reflection?
Image

Fordomatic! Ah, those were the days.

Of course, with our Italian population, there had to be a FIAT.

Interestingly, I only remember a few cars that were there when I went last, two years ago.

Quite the variety.

No, no, they're on the right side, the right. That's because we drive on the left, which is also the right side. OK?

Someone asked me when I was driving in Canada how I felt about driving on the right, and I just looked at them, as I'd just been driving in Italy, France and the UK after leaving Australia. You just do it.

Conversely my most unpleasant experience was driving a borrowed European left hooker on single-carriageway rural UK roads and having to overtake. Not nice.

Which one? I might have a pic.

Last batch for tonight.

A 1908 Auto Carrier. Use at Broken Hill by geologist, then at a winery!

The most ~um~ upfront mascot of the weekend. If you've got 'em stick 'em out!

I think we are in the 70s.

Argh. Voted 'most awful thing there' by Mrs JDK.

Gotta have a Ute, eh?

This suffered from a rash of 'wannabeBonds' (of a certain age...)

Now that's class. A real clock in the rearview mirror.

No apologies for the Citroen again (one I remember from last time). It has to be one of the best combinations of elegance and practicality.
Image

In action. Yeah, I'd missed the MG, as well! (By Bev.)

The yellow Ford Convertable was, I think, either 1935 or 1936. My mother had a black, 1936 five window coupe, with a rumble seat.

Hey James,

great pictures! There were some great cars there. Looks like you and Bev had a great time! I wish I could have been there!

Thanks for showing off those pictures!

Cheers,

David

'46-'48 Desoto! My dad had one of these in '52 (the shorter wheelbase version):

And there's one near here in a wrecking yard in 29 Palms, CA:

It looks like it had the rare "Sky View" sunroof. I'm so tempted to bring home the front end and display it in my living room... 8)

So many great cars down under we can't see here - thanks for posting 'em!
