What do you call certain foods?

Hi Guys,

I need anecdotal information to use as fillers in places in the books. so, my next three posts are aimed at this.

What do you call certain foods in your area? The three that came readily to mind are: 1) "Soda" is soda not pop! 2) A cheesesteak or other long sandwich is a "Hoagie", and "Faggots" are meat patties that are breaded and deep fried.

In Chicago, soda = club soda, what you drink at McDonalds is "pop." In California you eat a "submarine sandwich" (or "sub" for short), I believe they are also called "grinders."

New York has Sub Sandwiches also. Soda (pop, coke...) is soda.

Here in the southern (civilized) half of Wisconsin one washes down his sub sandwich with a can of soda.

As far as the northern (nether) regions of Wisconsin and the U.P., you'll have to check with Steve Dennis. As far as I know they still roast cave bear over an open flame.

Those "civilized" folks down south just don't know how good us Jack Pine Savages have it up here. This is God's country! (Besides, everyone knows Bears don't live in caves around here, they're called "DENS" Danny boy).

Hi Karen, do you just want them from the states or is this open to anywhere?

if so then you got a lot of words that change from over here.

eg butt, over there self explanatory. Here, a cigarette.

thong, also self explanatory. here, a rubber sandal like footwear called flip flops over there.

soda there is soft drink here.

a dagwood is a huge multilayered sandwich here ( courtesy of dagwood and blondie ).

and rob a hot toddy here is a warm drink for winter.

as for the venison over the open flame is the best way then I guess I'll have to try some done that way eh?

I can vouch for roo done flame grilled though.

I don't know, in Eastern NY we don't have the red/white things.

But thanks to many friends from WI I learned about Bratwursts, My life has never been the same. MUCH better

I grew up with BBQ sandwiches in Virginia (gotta love the old school lunch programs) and as far I as I'm concerned barbeque as a solitary word refers to pulled pork not sloppy joes. But thats Virginia for you.

It's true America: Nobody eats quite as well (or as much) as native cheeseheads. Wisconsin truly is America's delicatessen, and we wear our "highest-rate-of-coronary-heart-disease-in-the-nation" title as a badge of honor.

I hear that in some parts of the country women work out to maintain their shapeliness. Ladies, it's much less stressful here in Wisconsin: The more brewskis you serve your man, the thinner you will appear!
