Glider pilot license in Texas

Sat Nov 20, 2010 3:14 pm

hi all

I foresee spending a year around Austin Texas in my life, maybe next year... how much would be to get my glider license there? Is [Texas] good glider flying country?

cheers,

Don't know of any soaring down in the Austin area. Just south of Fort Woth, though is Midlothian, Tx, and the Texas Soaring Association is based there. If you aren't a US citizen, I don't know if you will have to jump through the same security hoops as powered students to get your ticket. Best bet would be getting in contact with the Association and talk to them.

There is soaring at Georgetown, close to San Marcos and Boerne Stage (NW San Antonio) if I remember correctly. CVs suggestion to contact Texas Soaring is a very good idea.

I'm pretty sure that there's a soaring group near our ranch in Briggs, TX - within about 30-45 miles of Austin, depending on what part of Austin you're talking about. Boerne Stage is probably your next best option. We have a very active group on the field, and some good instructors. You might even (on a rare occasion) find me in the tow plane. Yes, Texas is good soaring country. In fact, I think the world championships are supposed to be in Uvalde sometime in the near future. If you're here then, it might be a good excuse to go see some good glider flying, and see the Wildcat guys' projects.
