Somali Pirates-Solution

Tue Feb 22, 2011 3:05 pm

Why can't we just:

A: Hire Privateers (not the aircraft) like the English did to hunt them.

B: Take an old tanker and arm her up like the English did during WWII to make her look like a helpless tanker, but then full on Phalanx weapon systems once the pirates approach. BRRRRRRRPPPP., they are gone in a three second burst!

Thoughts?

The historical punishment for piracy has been ad-hoc trial, followed by the excecution of guilty parties.

Why have we moved away from that time-proven method?

Heck, the last guy we captured went to trial in NYC recently and was sentenced to 30 years. The prison he's in is probably palatial compared to his prior domicile. So why are we doing that again?

Wasn't the standard fate for pirates in Britian to place them in a steel strap cage suspended from the highest yard arm or pole in port until the birds finished packing them away? Or is that now too cruel for the poor, misguided, unfortunate folks?
B.S. run 'em up the pole in whatever passes for a main port in that god forsaken outhouse of a country and like agent 86 says, hire mercinaries to deal with them.

Piracy is pretty black and white. Hmm, you were on a hijacked boat, weren't on the manifest, and had an AK in your hands when we arrived on scene. Besides, your mom called and wanted a million bucks. Let me guess, it was a prank call, and you were holding the AK for a friend...

the problem with this mindset is that the pirates will develop a no holds barred attitude in response to the detah threat. As evidenced by the four people who just got headshot when our navy shadowed their boat. I'm not against it mind, just pointing out the reality of the situation.

I know. But the problem is that you cannot allow a group of thugs to turn hostage taking under the threat of murder into a growth industry. What we've been trying for the last few years obviously isn't working.

We need a different strategy. Violent retribution is a different strategy.

My solution: Re-establish letters of Marque and Reprisal - a completely Constitutional approach.

Muddy,

You should LIKE the idea. We'd save money (Neither R nor L lawmakers sending off troops, private citizens using their own money for their own reasons), could conveniently allow anyone that is immoral in their actions to suffer the consequences, and would probably have a lot more friends around the world.

Not to mention, some of us mind find a way to fund more warbirds... and do some "live fire" videos of them in use. Some Texas guy might really have his own little air force going out and taking the little pirate skiffs out.
