Never seen one like this before

I was driving yesterday, on the West side of the Mississippi, and in St. Mary's, MO I found this "Herzog" thingamajig.

Never seen this type of engine before. They were replacing rails with some type of concrete-like rail system.

I did not witness anything like it, but it makes perfect sense. There were some components made of what looked like concrete, alongside the existing railway. I did not get close enough, so that they would not claim I was trespassing. Neat system on that video above.

They're replacing the wooden ties with concrete ones for the new high speed rail system. Kansas City to St. Louis to Chicago. They did this in Granite City last year. We even got a new overpass out of the deal.Neat piece of machinery. I watched them do it........John

I shot that image South of St. Genevieve, MO.

The modifications for high speed rail are, AFAIK, between KCK / KCMO and Chicago, IL. This portion of railroad is way out of the high speed route, but I would guess that it also makes sense to replace wood ties with concrete ones, right? No matter the location.

Seattle area's SOUND TRANSIT is using cement sleepers for the light rail system in and around the Seattle area, yet another expensive debacle that is costing a Gajillion dollars, will be lightly used, go no where, cost to much to ride-sort of like our area SOUNDER commuter trains that (and both are the anti versions of L.A. and S.F. commuter rail systems), are frequently stopped by land slides on part of the expensively rented BNSF rails and are thinnly ridden but each and every seat on each and every train is subsidized to the tune of around $8 per seat per trip. I'm glad I moved out of the taxing area to support that 'never-never' system.
