This car beat the Bugatti Veyron a few years back with a top speed of 257 MPH! Then Bugatti took it back.

I hope they survive the attempt. An adapted aircraft isn't a good way of maintaining control on the ground.

I think you also meant 'North American' - it's a joint project by Canadians and some people south of their border.

Well you can probably bury your bobblehead moment, as it's highly unlikely that a piston powered or wheel driven 'car' will break the sound barrier. And if it were to do so it would be a class record, the absolute land speed record already being beyond Mach 1.

Of course there's the steam-engine land speed record, for those who are really retro in their motive power.

I hope it works! I talked to one of the crew members at an airshow (where the "car" was on display) and he showed me their braking system. It was basically an aluminum wheel/aluminum disc system. The pad's where attracted to the aluminum wheel and are designed to not contact the wheel. Electro, magnetic, aluminum system?

I've been lucky enough to view a number of Land Speed Record cars from the golden inter-war age and more recent (Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC) as well as briefly meeting Andy Green and Richard Noble at a LSR 'do', and one of the interesting things to me is the mix of high technology and 'just good enough' wire and string type solutions in most attempts, including the successful ones. Recently, however, I can't think of any absolute (rather than class) record-taker that was an adapted rather than wholly new design. I may be wrong, but the level of adaptation to an F-104 just seems to be that you'd be wiser to start with a clean piece of paper.

I wish them the best of luck, though I'm sure the Brits will be back if they lose it.

The current LSR for wheel driven vehicles is 470.444 MPH in the mile, set by Don Vesco set @ Bonnieville on 10/18/2001 after well over a decade of trying in a car that looks like a dead ringer for a top fuel dragster.
