I think you're right on the "harvesting" for fur...now they're a nuisance and clog up canals and drainage ditches with their newfound habitats. The local sheriff's department (before Katrina) would send flat-bottom boats with suppressed .22s and crossbows to help keep the population down.
If you're a landowner, you can turn in the tails for about $5 apiece and for a while people were trying to market nutria meat as a delicacy.
Frankly, I'm not brave enough to try it and I don't think their fur is that great either
