It doesn't seem right to expose young kids to this, there are horrible things in the world, but I don't think a 9 year old needs to focus on them yet. On the other hand if I was teaching history or govt to high school seniors, I'd want them all to see this movie.
As for being slow, well it is a movie that makes one think, not just a slam crash car chase sword fight shoot em up type, that you won't remember a week later. I saw the Bond one a couple of weeks ago and I can't even remember what the villan looked like, what clothes they wore, and barely remember the girl.
It is not the main point of the movie, but a side view is the whole idea of war and duty of a military man to your country. You are following orders, being patriotic, but what if the orders come from a madman? What if the ideas you are told are lies? What if you though being a soldier meant fighting an enemy in open combat and instead it comes to mean dropping the gas canister on Jews? Or in our case torturing prisoners? Situations like this try to substitute the nation or whatever dictator runs it, for the individuals inherent sense of right and wrong. I think that is one of the main points where I differ from our military and even at our worst, we don't approach what the Nazis or Japanese did.
That is what makes this a great country, we are free to decide right and wrong for ourselves and children. My choice is just that. My choice was not decided on the afore mentioned reason but based on the fact that our schools do not teach more then "there was a war and we won." I had no idea there was war going on in Alaska until I graduated. They brushed over Stalin killing more people then the Nazis did. (I am not putting a shiny spin on what Hitler did.) Another fact that is not taught in school is that not all Germans believed in Hitler and the Nazis. It was implied that all Germans and Japanese were evil and would stop at nothing short of ruling the world! So if my kids go to school and bring up what they saw at the movie and it opens up discussion, maybe it will start the thinking process in another young mind?
Sorry you wasted your money on Bond, I don't even bother with that type of crap. I don't need a slam bam thank you mam movie to keep my attention. I did not say that it was so slow that I was wondering if I left the coffee maker on.
Following orders is one thing when the cause is just and right. But when you slaughter millions of people because your C/O told you to is no reason to nor is it patriotic! All of us have a sense of right and wrong its your choice to do the right thing or not.
My decision to teach my kids the truth as I understand it and not shelter them, and guide them threw their decision process is my duty to them. I want them to be free to think and see things and make up their own minds, with my guidance. Hopefully they will do the same for their kids .
