GI Joe. I began as a student pilot in a Cheokee 140, the Piper eq. of a 172. To do my cross country I moved up to a Warrior with a fire breatihing 160 hp. Four years later I owned a fighter with 10 times that much power! If you put in the study time and have a good instructor it'll come. The new interactive computer or DVDs make it easier than the books in the old days. All that basic stuff is imporant and it is the first 2/3 of the advanced ratings. It still bugs me that I missed one on my written test, something about lighting. No one has to move any further than a 172, it is safe forgiving trainer. All I meant was many other planes have more responsive handling, or more power or character. I still remember my first T-6 ride.
