Roger's recent post of the QE coming into SF Bay had me digging out
this shot of me on the Nimitz has we came into the Bay to unload '
our nukes (can I say that?) prior to ungoing SLEP at Bremerton in 1990
or so. All the car going by above us made a strange humming sound.

Na, .45 and a 12 guage. Proivding security for a 'special' weps offload
with a club magazine or even a club sandwich is very much frowned
upon.

Jack,

Here's one of my pics taken just after the cease fire in Iraq back during the 1st Gulf War. As you can see from the pic it's been about 2 months since I had a shower...things were smellin pretty ripe! :x Oh and Jack...you must've been one of the lucky ones because we didn't have any skin mags with us while we were over there.

I don't think anyone was lucky. Some were
unluckier than others. If you'd ever done a cruise you'd never
use the word lucky. Better words are dirty, exhausting, lonely,
dangerous or scary on occasion. :?

Jack,

That comment was all in fun and not meant to be derogatory in any way toward you Navy guys. I know you guys had to put up with just as much B.S. as everyone else...my hat goes off to you guys and all the other soldiers, sailers, airmen, and marines.

That's the problem...it was impossible to get clean. Besides taking a "whore's bath" every now and then to clean the family jewels we really didn't have enough water to bath with. During Desert Shield we had porta showers while living in tents out in the Saudi desert. Once we moved up on the border around Christmas 1990 that was pretty much it for showers. Our Bradley Fighting Vehicle had 8 guys on board and we were allowed one 5 gallon can of water per day while on the border. This is enough to drink, shave, brush your teeth, and not much else. Some of us used a neat little trick the German Africa Corp used during WWII. You strip down naked and wash your uniform with sand. Your clothes actually get stiff from all the dirt, sweat, and body oils. The sand actually absorbs the grime and makes your clothes plyable. They are still dirty and smelly of course, but a bit more comfortable. The hardest part about living like that is being crowded in a cramped armored vehicle with 7 other smelly G.I.'s What's funny is that you get used to your own personal aroma but can't stand the guy sitting next to you. Of course he's thinking the same thing about you. It gets so bad you look forward to somebody dropping ass inside the vehicle so you can smell something different for a change! :x

John

Here are a few more pics for your viewing pleasure!
