GPS Unit advice needed

Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:48 pm

I was thinking of picking up a GPS for hiking and hunting and such things. I don't need it for the car or an airplane.

Anyone have any advice on what to buy or not to buy.

One last thing, it needs to be able to have topo-map capabilities.

Check the Cabela's or the Bass Pro Shops catalogs. They have plenty of models that go for about $100-$200 (with topo capabilities).

Rhino is a model that comes to mind; other sites for operational comments on the GPS units could be for example, geocaching websites, or any hunting or sporting groups.

I just gave away a Magellan to a friend, but this one did not have all the modern features and although a hand-held, and brand new-in-the box, it was an outdated model.

Bought a Tom-tom about a week ago for my car, and I am simply pleased with it.

Good luck with your search.

You can check out West Marine's site, too, Tim. Lots of GPS units to choose from there, many with the features you're looking for...........And then some!!!!

I think currently the best GPS chip is the SiRFstar III, so look for one that has that chip inside. It will be more accurate under trees and between mountains.
