I could not believe watching ABC News this am, (in Hong Kong we get ABC Evening News at 7.30am).

65 Television stations declined to show the movie Saving Pvt Ryan, as the "F" words appears with regularity along with other expletives.

This political correctness seems to be getting out of hand.

I got lamblasted some weeks ago by an Australian lady tourist, I was best man at a friends wedding and was greeting my mates and their wives, girlfriends, mistresses in a bar/restaurant, with things like Darling, Sweetie, Princess etc., prior to the boys going off after dinner for the stag night.

The lady got upset and said I was demeening women by not addressing them with their correct names and that words like darling, sweetie and princess were politically incorrect, I could not get a word in edgewise for about 5 minutes, until when she took a breath, I explained that these were their REAL names, and was backed up by the ladies concerned, who by this time were no longer being polite, never mind politcally correct.

Exit one embarassed politically correct activist.

It's a good job she didn't follow us for the stag night entertainment!!!!
as this is a PG forum, I can't divulge what transpired, I'll let your imaginations run riot, but great fun was had by all.

Stuart: Our local ABC outlet was one that declined to run the film in the assigned time slot. ABC management declined to let them delay the airing to the 8 pm time slot to reduce the number of under 13 year old's that would potentially be watching it. With that word for the network, it was decided to air some alternate programming, part of which was a locally produced show honoring the vets. The biggest problem the local cited was the FCC's ultra aggressiveness on inappropriate items for the time slot....ala JJackson's wardrobe failure, coupled with the net not allowing a time shift for the film to be run outside of the "family hours".
With the way the feds are choosing to crack down on broadcasters, I wouldn't consider it a PC move to not air it, but a CYA move, especially when you are laying of numerous employees.

I think Stuart that you will find that political correctness, while being a contributing factor no doubt, was not the primary motivation for the boycott. The affiliates are running around scared out of their minds that the F.C.C. (Federal Communications Commission) will levy fines against them ala Janet Jackson because the movie contains "graphic content".

If that were truly the case you would think that the F.C.C. would be passing out fines for the evening news. Turner Network Television should be getting a whopper of a fine since they showed We Were Soldiers all weekend long. It's stupidity taken to yet another low. :Hangman:

being an adult re-entry university student you can understand my amusement when one of my lectures on visual arts was effectively hijacked for about 3/4's of it's duration by nothing more than a monologue of political correctness, aboriginal rights, feminist views and similar such things by one student.
The best part, the lecture was on gender bias within early art history, the lecturer effectively ended the tirade by simply saying " now that we have heard all that could any of you doubt that the ways that the past artists managed their models was correct so that they could get their work done, in that they always had them have their mouths shut? Since we are now out of time due to this rhetoric anyone , except you since I know you will not produce an original or acceptable argument about this <indicated student involved>, may approach me at any time for a copy of my lecture notes."

the entire lecture theatre with one exception applauded mightily.

when applying for my copy I looked at him and said " can't you imagine the Mona Lisa based on her? "

he laughed.

Guys,

I understand the reason behind not showing the movie, but there are technical ways of changing dialogue, which happens all the time here in Hong Kong, we constantly have dialogue changed because of expletives and our movies run after 9.30pm.

As for the Janet Jackson episode, lame excuse for a very obvious stunt.

My point that I was trying to make is that the politically correct inquisitors are trying and in some cases succeeding to change everyday language and actions into something incomprehensible, I'm waiting for the day when the words "war" and "bird" in the same sentence is considered politically incorrect, we may be made to change it into:-

Obsolete Airial Vehicle of Defunct Military Intentions.

Mind you I still prefer Jeff Hawkes description of the B24
"A Gentlemens Carriage"

ABC would have been happy to change the dialog electronically, but by the contract they signed with the film's owners, there could be no cuts, no bleeps, no alterations of any kind. The film had to air exactly as it showed in the theater. Kinda makes it hard to alter it to fit within the family hour under that kind of restriction.

Not a big deal to me anyway, as the use of digital cameras and an abnormal framerate keeps me from watching it anyway.

If the FCC had its way they would have replaced all the harsh language with baby talk and all the combat would have been replaced by time outs. (Cuz we all know how well timeouts work when disciplining kids).

SPR should be show to all high school seniors every year. Maybe we would have less ignorant prtestors who are doing it because its fashionable.

Not even that all the time Scott. I know of one guy who made the trip from Adelaide to Woomera to protest the treatment of the detainees ( illegal immgrants/refugees/whatevers ) in teh woomera detention centre and all he complained about when he got back was the heat, the flies and the fact he did not get arrested and a free trip home and his face on tv.
