On top of that, the lead character is a Royal tushy, severely lacking in people skills or empathy for others. A real role model...

All right, where did this "tushy" come from? That ain't what I typed, and what I typed wasn't all that bad! Stoooopid censor program!!!!!

By the way I typed in AR$E, figured the Commonwealth types would know what I was talking about

to give it a airplane twist, he got the part of House from a audition tape made while on the set of The Flight of the Phoenix.

I happen to like it. The medical cases are fascinating, and the show presents the conundrum of whether you'd rather have a mediocre doctor with great bedside manners who makes you feel all warm and happy about whatever crotch-rot you've come down with; or the royal prick to really knows his s%*t and will save your life. To put an aviation spin on it, consider the same scenario with pilots. Whose plane would you rather be on? I'll take the prick that knows his/her stuff any day.

House follows the socratic method. Get all the information you can and make a decision. if that is worng, the results will show you more information. if it kills the patient, you can't allow yourself to grieve becaus eit will endanger the next patient.

He's basically stuck between the urge to help them and the certain knowledge taht soem people can't be helped because they lie, and because tehre is no way to ever know enough initially about some problems.

His pain pill addiction is a result of real pain. His sturggle, and the struiggle of those around him, is that he might not be faking, and even if he is, he needs them to function, and to remain functinal, and without them he's usuelss (been shown repeatedly) and he is unfortunately, the only person who seems able to save the patients they send him. Is it better to help a criminal knowing that his crimes save lives, or is it better to stop the criminal even though people may die if you do?

Interesting show, if you aren't filled anally righteous indignation at the thought that a hero can have flaws.

He reminds me of many of the doctors I deal with from time to time.

Actually you're wrong. A lot of people who suffer from chronic pain end up addicted to painkillers and ruining their lives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_pain

Did you somehow miss that I described him as having an addiction caused by chronic pain> Pain is pain, no matter how much you want to belittle him for the addiction he's picked up due to it. And addiction is addiction, no matter how much you want to justify it by need. That's why it is a drama jack. It's dramatic :)

There's a huge difference betwen an a'drug addict' and someones who takes a prescribed scheduled drug for pain relief and who's body becomes 'addicted" to it.
This maybe the 1 subject besides airplanes I know something about.
House, BTW, take Vicodin a schedule 3 drug just above 'Gummy Bear's.

We're bck to the same old ground Jack. He became addicted because he has chronic pain. People who are addicted to drugs often do bad things to increase their supply when they think they aren't working any more. When my leg wound got infected they put me on Codeine and then took me off waaay before the pain went away so I wouldn't get addicted. I definitely know why one would want to avoide TAHt happening. I don't know much about the classes of drugs, but vicodin never did much for me. I thought it was one of the less effective painkillers. Am I wrong about that?

You don't seem to have had this kind of anger about Cindy McCain, who was literally doing the same things House does. Heck, SHE got off and all her docs went to jail over it. By that blueprint House will walk and all his doc buddies will do prison time :)

I can't believe we're in an argument about a tv show :axe: :partyman: :nuker: :drink3:

You and I have now reached the height of goofiness lolz!

I am not sayign he's a great guy. I'm just sayin the whole drama of the show is built around the idea taht this brilliant guy has such a huge and fatal flaw. It's not just the drugs, it's his whole mindset that drives people away, gets him in =trouble, and has got him addicted. Nobody can survive being TAHt big an egomaniac.

That's way to general of a statement are you talking dope fiends or folks with actual pain. If the former I agree, the later I disagree.

Vicodin is on the lower end. Besides having chronic pain sufferers in my family, I worked at the county Methadone clinic while going to college  :? I ain't seen it all, but I've seen enough :!:

Jack, it has been well documented taht people with chronic pain have a propensity to become addicted ,and then to start doing bad things to ensure their supply isn't cut off.

Rush Limbaugh and Cindy McCain are both very good examples of this. Both had back surgeries, both became addicted to the painkillers, and both broke the law to enable themselves to continue to take prescription pain killers in increasing amounts after their initial prescriptions had run out.

Almost exactly the same pattern House has, in fact. Cindy McCain has been quoted as describing herself eating Percocet like M&M's....

Now, I don't know if House has actual pain, But he had a massive surgury to save a leg that had died, had huge amount of dead tissue removed, and refused to have his leg removed. He now claims to be in constant pain from it. In his mid he is dealing with the pain, same as any other patient would. Is he a junkie or a person dealing with actual pain? I personally don't think I have anywhere near the amount of information to make this judgement, and neither do the doctors he works with.

Its one of thos ethings modern medicine is just beginning to come to grips with: We don't have a very good system for determninng whether pain is severe enough to warrant real painkillers, and we don't have very good safe painkillers and they are very easily abused. I kind of think that is the point of his addiction to the producers.

Did yuo notice the military is working with a new way to block pain by hitting its signals at the spinal column? They've been doing surgeries on soldiers now where they do a spinal block of some sort, and it completely kills any sensation below that spot on the spine, and rduxes the amount of drugs needed, and is a lot safer? Dunno what it's called and how it works but it's supposed to be a dramatic leap forward in treating severe pain safely...Any idea what I'm talking about? I'll try and find it.

I just think it is a way to give the hero of the show a weak spot. meaning that he is not perfect, but human. Look at Hawkeye from M*A*S*H. He was an amazing doctor, but many times battled drinking and other things on the show.
