have you guys all seen the commercials that say you can use your own photo for the picture on your credit card? Well I went online and substituted my request to place on a card. A day later I got the notice that my request was turned down as they felt that the image I gave them was not P.C. for a card that would be seen by many. The images were inappropriate and glorified war. The image I sent in you ask?

I suggest you UN-apply for their card. And I will consider cutting up my current Capital One card, too.

Political Correctness of this kind is a disease that will only be squashed when people refuse to bow to it.

I hear CitiBank is looking for new customers... Might want to apply over there. ;-)

Ironic.

I'd tell them you are taking your business elsewhere, and do so.

That said, personally I'd not put a swastika on anything I 'presented' like a card, as it is offensive to some, for good reason.

The people that should be offended by it the most are those who fought for it. The Swoose and the Memphis Belle are symbols of the brave crews that fought for our freedom. Very sad when their image is not allowed on a card. I have already cancelled my card, and told them why.

Sure.

I've had a few interesting discussions with people with personal history about that kind of swastika. Some don't mind, some do. Personally I'd leave it out unless there's good reason to show it. I've never minded the name 'Confederate' come to that. (Ducks, runs...)

In Germany display of a swastika in any fashion - other than musuems - can be interpreted as a criminal offense.

Capital One - or VISA - could receive some serious fines if you used the card there. Personally, I dont' blame them for denying the image on that basis.

I cancelled my CapitalOne card when one of their TeleDrones actually asked me to commit fraud by applying for another card in a different name....

Now, now. The day Confederate is equated with Nazi... That's just wrong. I guess some of us will have to teach you a history lesson someday - but not on this board.

As far as the swastika goes, I like the symbol about as much as I like the coyotes that have eaten some goats at our ranch. That said, the banning of it is ridiculous, unless it is being used by those who are sympathetic with the ideology. Especially if it's a "kill" marking.
Also fun is seeing the "Flying Tiger" P-40s that were done in China without the star in the middle.
I wonder if they also ban purchases of toy soldiers, army surplus, military models, etc... with the card - if they are really trying to prevent the "glorification" of war.

Hmmm. I didn't 'equate' the two together - you did. I didn't change the name of the CAF... ;)

I don't think you'd like my comprehension questions at the end of your history lesson.

I'm not suggesting 'banning' the swastika. I've just had a couple of conversations with people who find it very upsetting - for them, and for that reason, I'm cautious about waving it about.

Of course we are all very robust about other people being offended, but as Ryan's kindly shown, we come over all sensitive about our own signs and symbols.

FYI, I apologize for wording that badly. I was not trying to say you actually did equate the two. More of a gentle chiding for including it in the argument. After all, you did do the duck thing! Oh, and there are issues with the Confederate cause that I'd be the first to admit and denounce! However, some history there is often conveniently overlooked... but still kept alive by the descendants of non-slave-owning Southerners who's fathers were honorable and fought for a diversity of important issues. Comprehension questions welcome. 8)

What I find odd is how people equate the placing of the symbol in it's accurate, historical context, (with a major qualification that the symbol is not immoral by itself) with somehow waving the flag about.

Ryan

BTW, I reckon I should probably drop the Confederate argument before the thread gets locked... feel free to respond, but I won't post again on the topic here. Email me about it if you feel the need. I ain't some indiscriminate, racist, KKK type like some.

Fair points Ryan, looks like we both misread a bit! I think we can leave the Confederate item lie.

My experience with the swastika discussions was one being 'shot down' in the Battle of Britain film poster. As I say, the conversations I had with people who'd dealt with the actions of the Nazis at first-hand meant where I can avoid using it in future, I would, because I was shocked and surprised at their reaction - maybe I was naive. That said, I have written about the symbol itself, and obviously illustrated it, and I wouldn't remove it in acurate depictions.

All this is just my view - which I've no intention of forcing on anyone else.

Regards,
