Interesting that two hand grenades were turned in. Are those weapons of choice for gang bangers? Did they give them the handgun rate or the assault rifle rate for those? Most likely they were practice grenades which are not dangerous anyhow.

So how many gang bangers do you think turned in their guns? My guess is about zero.

The point is taken about poorly stored weapons getting stolen in a burglary. I recently was the victim of a burglary, but the gun safe was an adequate deterrent. They stole more portable items instead.

I'm not much of a survivalist type, but if the end were near, I think I would hold onto my guns!

As noted in the article, they started this program three years ago. Similar "turn-ins" have also been done in other cities as well, in the past (some with no $$ incentive).

I would bet that when the city has a "No questions asked turn in" the gang bangers go out and steal some legal guns for pocket money.

Or you can go buy something like a cheap Moisan Nagant Russian rifle for like $60 or something and make a buck or two!

Spray paint it black and it becomes an "Assault Weapon" and you can get $200!

I don't think the end is near. From a conservative standpoint, it would seem to be with the government doing this. However, reading the article in it's context seems to indicate that the target people are gang bangers in Compton CA.

It is not safe for a non-gang member to walk through Compton. Quite a few car jackings and other things like that have occured there over the past several years. The military in Long Beach bans servicemen from going there. It's called a high risk zone or something like that.

You guys are missing the bigger picture? Compton, NYC, SF, DC? Where does it stop? Or does it, will we end up like England or Australia?

Totally with you 262. I personally think they were targeting a gang and drug prone area. If it goes any further than that I could be exceedingly concerned as well as many others.

The point is, how many gang bangers will turn in guns for a measly $100? Only law abiding citizens willl, who, by turning in thier gun abdicates their responsibility for protecting their own family. Rely on the government to take care of you first, then rely on them for what next? A job? Food? Medical? It is a slippery slope!

Ok, I am misguided on the issue. I take bdk's and 262's side.

About 7 years ago when we were having a little trouble with gangs in the neighborhood of our shop, the Sgt. that handles our area told me I could wear my pistol on our property if I wanted to. His only concern was that if it was a large enough caliber. He didn't want me outgunned. 8)

Bingo! Sounds like all of us are on the same wave length.
