HI again,

When I lived in North Dakota there were many foods that we were not able to get. It wasn't until then that I learned not all foods are packaged nationally.

Here are some of my part of the Northeast's regional items.....Hard Pretzels, Birch Beer, Lebanon Bolognia, Tastykakes, Wise potato chips, Middlesworth potato chips, Charles potato chips. Genesee beer, Rolling Rock Beer......

OK your turn!

Karen

Chicken Fried Steak!

You see it in Texas and many other southern states, but once in KY, when I asked for it at a cafeteria, I was surrounded by police, firefighters and Homeland Security dudes! They have never heard of such a thing, and thought I was asking for WMDs! : )

SALSA!!! No,not the dance, but the tomatoes, jalapeno peppers and onions and vinegar mixture, that is used to eat with everything, from chips to hamburgers. I had to bring a gallon of it on my trip to Montreal, to the delight of my relatives, who had not tasted it in ages!

Tamales. No, not the mexican tamales but GUATEMALAN tamales, big as a brick, with pork meat, raisins and one single prune plus oh, man! I can't continue writing this, I need to grab a bite! : )

Saludos,

Tulio

Tulio,

I would love to see your recipes for chicken fried steak, (Funny story!!), Tamales, and salsa!! I have been making homemade salsa for a very long time, but I have to make two batches......my youngest son has, (and this has been scientifically proven), the cilantro gene.....Cilantro tastes like soap to him. Any and all recipes you care to share will definitely have a place in the book!!!!

Thanks!
Karen

What a fascinating story! I did not know that! I have often heard the word moxie used to describe someone, but never knew its origins. What does it taste like?

I keep that Moxie link in favorites and put it up in a separate window while I'm surfing so I can listen to the piano music. Grandma used to play piano for the silent picture shows and the style is quite similar to the Moxie page.

It is most relaxing. :drinkers:

Col,

I would love to try Moxie. I discovered how costly soda is to send through the Postal Service, when a dear friend in Florida asked me to send him Birch beer. I paid four dollars for the case of soda, and fourteen dollars to send it! If you can mail a six pack I will be happy to pay whatever it costs. I would love for my boys to try something with so much history attached to it!

I am just loving these threads guys! Thanks so much!

Thanks Rob!

I had no idea it was available in PA! Most of the towns are about 100 miles from me, but I will definitely look for it the next time I pass through one of them. Thanks so much!
