Bought a Canon Rebel XT

Hopefully I’ll receive that early next week and have it for the NEAM tour.
I figure in a few years I can upgrade to one of the New and Improved models that are out.

I also picked up a
75-300mm Canon Telephoto f/4.0-5.6 EF IS lens
Spare battery
Lex 1Gig x80 CF card
I’m now ready for Air shows.

So what hints can you all share about using the SLR-D for a/c photos? I used a 35mm SLR for about 14 years, so I have some experience with SLR. But the whole sharpness and other settings stuff with the Digital is new to me, my other digital cameras are pretty basic.

Tim,

Congratulations! Practice on anything you can and then sit at the computer and see
what worked best.

I try to shoot A/C in flight in Shutter speed Priority (TV, on Canon). With 300mm lens
shutter speed should be at least 300, I have better results at
400 and still get some desired prop blur. Jets I shoot even faster.

You will be able to get plenty on the 1 gig card.
With your 35mm knowledge you should understand things.
Just try a lot of different stuff. There is a lot of camera knowedge on this board.
AIRIC was very kind to help me when I started with digital.

Tim,

I have spent the last few days looking at DSLRs, and I have yet to make my mind.

I almost bought a Canon New Rebel this last Friday, as well as a stabilized (sp?) 70-300mm lens, but at the last moment chickened out.

Please keep us posted regarding your experiences with your new camera.

Same as you, I have been shooting an SLR, since the 1970s and bought my Canon AT-1 in 1980.

I have never had luck with this. My cameras always expose for the sky, not the aircraft. I always set the aperture and shutter speed (full manual mode).

Maybe it is because of the runway position at Chino, where I usually shoot.

Anyone have the Nikon with the IS telephoto?

I ordered everything Thursday from 2 companies. Both are well know. One I have used one a ton in the past while work my last job, that is B&H. I can't say enough good things about that company.

Friday my order from B&H Camera /photo came in with my Battery and lens.

I was still fighting with the other company to ship my order this morning. That is the camera and 1G CF card.

What a nightmare this has been. We'll see if I get the order by Saturday? I guess I might feel like Scott at the NH airshow last year. He's at the airshow and his new camera is setting on the doorstep

I decided to jump in, and just bought the Canon EOS Rebel XT (Digital) camera at a local camera dealer in St. Louis.

I was going to buy a more expensive camera, but since I do not make a living off photography, decided to go this way.

I also purchased an EFS 17-85mm (Image Stabilizer) lens, and a 1 Mega data card.

Later, I will purchase the stabilized telephoto, but first I plan on learning the features of this new toy.

The plan is to keep using my old Canon AT-1, that still works like a charm after 25 years of constant use.

I found the camera should be in my hands Thursday after work. 90 minutes to charge the battery. That puts me a 7pm to start playing with my camera.

Maybe I’ll take it to work and hang out in the flight pattern of ALB, and hope I’m not arrested for taking pictures of airliners on final. :shock:

The most annoying 90 minutes of my life was when I had to charge the battery when I got my 20D

My camera is at the house!

1+ hour and I can open it up! I can't wait 1hour 20 minutes + 90 minutes. This is going to be painful

I was able to us the camera at the Great New England Wix Gathering at the NEAM. I'll post a few pictures, as requested from our delinquents in the group.

I really like it; I can't wait to try it out on some flying Warbirds

I am finally able to down load my pictures, I need to upgrade my Win98 1st edition.

Resurecting an old post... thats relevant...

I'm in the same boat you folks were a few months ago.. seems like
many picked the Canons which is what I'm used to with my ancient
AE -1 /tamron combo (black metal one no less!) But it jammed up
as the cranking spool broke at the udvar hazy just over a week ago...

So.. the big question of D-slr's is hot on my mind... I just posed a
question on the dust/cleaning issue of late.. but I'd like to open it up
and see if anyone considered the olympus E300 at all? it has the
digital lenses w/ upgradeable firmware, the ccd dust cleaning and
seems built like a rock... one of the camera shop pro's was really
big on it but I wanted to check out more. In many of the reviews
I've seen the 20D is tops, but much more $$$.

any thoughts or comments?
