I'm pretty sure it has to do with people realizing that they were idiots and going back and changing things to say other than what they originally said - and then trying to make it like they never said it. It's not such a bad thing. It just means that if you're posting in the off-topic section, you'd better think through what you say before you post it.
I know it happened on at least a few threads that I participated in.
