Ummm apparently that was one person, not the entire operation. Lets not destroy the only thing that can give kids dreams for tomorrow and propel our entire civilization into the only thing thats really left to explore and figure out. Space (for our generation) is the Atlantic Ocean for Columbus' generation. It's more than just looking at the next year and snuffing NASA because everybody doesn't like the placement of the former shuttles. You know what? We should already have the next set of shuttles built, used, decommissioned, and put on display in other locations. So were on to the third set. And forth set. NASA is SO important to the human race its not funny. At least I believe so.

I would like to add that we know more about the surface of the moon and mars then we do about whats under the ocean.
The united states has more land under water off our coasts, then the entire visible surface. we are only using >1/2 of the international recognized boarders.
The mid oceanic rift was discovered in the 50's along with black smokers. A chemotrophic non photosynthetic ecco system. i think more people have been to the moon then the bottom of the ocean. Its easy to focus on the visable and overlook what is equally as spectacular right hear at home.

NASA and our spaceflight programs fuel our aerospace industries, accelerates computer technology and drives science at phenominal rates. It excites our youth to enter into science, engineering and aerospace career fields. It advances our understanding of our planet and the solar system. Look at what the last 50 years has brought us. I think a strong and robust NASA budget is well worth it if the money can be properly used i.e. we need to return to the moon (we barely scratched the surface), lay-out a systematic roadmap for getting to Mars and we need a plan for Low Earth Orbit after the ISS is obsolete...

Space is done, we already know we can fly rockets to far away places. What's the point, we landed on the moon over 40 years ago. Space is now in its commercial exploitation phase. Let Elon Musk and Bert Rutan map out that future.

We should be investing in the next new technology- maybe electric cars or solar cells, and then time travel or matter transporters.
