You probably saw my post about starting a website. Things are progressing as well as you might expect a beginner to progress.

What I would like to know is what is your favorite aviation museum website? I.e. what museum, and what do you like about their website?

Comments regarding what you don't like would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for any comments you may have.

Regards,

Mike

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

Mike
I'll have to pick my brain for the best in different ways. POF and HAG have mueum post boards which is nice.

But I find fault with the number that never update the websites, of have far too little info about the planes and pictures of them

P-40 is not good enough for me. I would what to know P-40N and serial number... I would love to see a history of that airframe, not just a over of the type. You know something for everyone.

Thanks for the input Tim. I was beginning to think no-one would reply.

Your opinions actually match mine fairly closely. I don't think most museums pay enough attention to their websites. I.e...
-> no regular updates
-> sometimes lots of flash (fancy graphics) but no useful details
-> often nothing of educational value
-> etc.

I have yet to find a museum website that covers all bases.

It is good to know I am not out in left field someplace. :wink:

Mike

Hi Mike,

I had the same problem when I saw your posting the other day. With just a short time to check my lists due to enormous amounts of homework, I really couldn't find a favorite. As Tim mentioned, I too would like to see more detail on the museums particular aircraft, maybe some history, C/N numbers, etc. The typical generic info is good for a person not familiar with the type, but for those of us with a heavier interest, most are usually thin, nor updated.

Out my way there is the Pacific Coast Air Museum http://pacificcoastairmuseum.org/index.asp that has quite a bit of information, and pictures of their aircraft.

One page is loaded with pictures of the individual aircraft, and below it are several links to the history, and specifications. Some of their newer aircraft are still awaiting information updates, but overall, a good website.

Worry less about style and design; just don’t make it 1996 ugly.

Assume all your visitors have dialup.

Forget about a board.

Update every week, and make a big deal about updates. Any kind of news is news. There are some very pretty sites out there, but the number one complaint seems to be “What’s going on now? The site has not been updated for ages…”

I would agree about "forget about a board".

It seems that they take years to get regular traffic on it and it’s a spam and "crap" magnet for those spreading filth.
