Just read his MOH bio, incredible - what a pilot!

Thanks for the point in the right direction.

Corsairs have long been my favourite too... not quite sure what it is, but they have definitely got my heart.
If you liked that air-to-air, there are more of them here...

Wow, you have some stunning shots of the Corsair... just beautiful! The one with the lighthouse is very pretty as well, two of my favorite things, warbirds and lighthouses.
Thanks for sharing, those are great!

1] 1975 or 1976 sitting in the left seat of a Navalized B-25 at the annual air show at Paine Field, Everett, WA. The plane was owned and flown by (as I remember) a Cmdr. Don Gilbertson. The nose art on the plane was a drunken Sylvester the cat with a martini in his hand. The name of the plane.........Tight Pus*y!
2) 1979 Reno Air Races----- talking to Steve Hinton while we stood next to The Red Baron-----about two hours later the plane was totally destroyed because of a malfunction with its contra-rotating prop.
The Red Baron sure was a BEAUTIFUL Mustang!!!
3) Summer of 1988 or 1989-------at the Corvallis, OR airport-------sitting in the cockpit of White Lightnin' and doing my best Rex Barber imitation while fantasizing shooting down Betty bombers!

With the OR/WA talk, you must be in the area? I don't know many WIXers that are, so that's nice if so!

Yes......I live in the Salem OR area. I think there are a few of us, for sure

We Pac. Northwest folks do have a great selection of museums. That reminds me, I need to drop in and see that P-47 at Tillamook once they re-open.

it's not good pratice to stand in the prop arc and I hate to see that in a photo.
I'm not quite sure what you're refering to..I took the photo of the prop from the right seat cockpit window (which was open.)
<edit> Oh..you must have been refering to the people in the poster pic..yeah, that's a bit too close for comfort!

Steve, one photo shows one boy leaning against the prop and the other in the plaid pants in in the prop arc. I think we should regard props as like guns and not get in front of them.

Ahhh...the one in the plaid pants is my buddy Garry and the one leaning on the prop is me.

The photo was taken by his dad. Of course, we didn't know jack about airplanes in those days..

1969 my dad took me to the movies to see this film called "Battle of Britain", the sound of the Merlins still haunts me today.
The following year, i was 7 years old at the time, he took me to the California 1000 in San Diego where i met Franks Sanders. The Sea Fury coming across the finish line and pitching skyward with those eliptical wings grabbing for the sky???? I was hooked and have been ever since!

My dad is a PBY veteran and he got me hooked on warbirds. My closest friends and I would play WWII instead of sports and my favorite TV show mid-60's was 12 O Clock High.
My brother and I went to Wings Over Houston in '04 and I went to Lone Star Flight Museum the same year. Hook line and sinker time. My significant other gave me LSFM membership for Valentines Day that year. What a gal! Just don't make her go to an airshow.

When I was a kid I built models out of solid wood, none of the modern plastic mess. Mostly I was into desruction so I built bombers; had B-24, B-25, T-33 or F-80,P-61, all hanging across my ceiling. All I have now is a photo, not sure where the planes went. In my teens, there was an airshow at Andrau Airport off Westhiemer in Houston, does anyone remember that fine little airport? I don't recall warbirds, but a J-3 Cub landed on a car top and I remember that still. Years later I got to land there in my Spitfire a few times; the runway was not that big! Finally a developer got it.
