I'm thinking tank engine.

There is no way any airplane person would not find out exactly what it is knowing how much they cost.

I don't wanna be casting any kinda bad light on these cats,,,buutttttt,,,,they know exactly what it is, and if it was a merlin aircraft engine, it wouldn't be on ebay. And it's also super convieniant that the dataplate is missing.

OK, I guess I am saying something bad about them. It's not exactly an ebay first.......

If I'm wrong, I'll take my lumps for it.

It is a MERLIN AIRCRAFT ENGINE. Its a single stage engine that has very few parts that are useful to a P-51. or later MERLIN powered SPITFIRES. It pretty common to find these in very good low time condition.

OP, this engine clearly has a single stage supercharger on the rear. Do you know if the tank engine was supercharged? It doesn't seem logical that a tank woud need the extra boost. It would be imporant to find out the specific model of this engine and what planes it might fit. It is genuine Rolls Royce, not a Packard if the data plate was legit. It might fit the BOB Mk II Spit, maybe a Hurri. Which model did the P-40 use? One really should see it before buying. $10, 000 plus seems to high forf a static display engine. It has a ring of truth, however the loss of the data plate is a story almost too convenient, and I'm not sure Ebay is the source for most real warbird parts.

The P-40F used a PACKARD 1650-1. Also a single stage merlin but built by PACKARD. The single stage merlins are only used in Mk V or ealier SPITS and the hurricane. May also be of use to a LANCASTER but I dont know about that. I am only naming airplanes that are in operation currently.

Maybe for a Canadian Battle, Lancaster or Hurricane?

I guess it's lump taking time for me. I found this on the ole interweb....

"For tank use the Merlin had its supercharger removed and was de-rated to approx 600 bhp (447 kW). In addition, because weight-saving was not so important for a tank engine some of the Merlin's more expensive light-alloy components were replaced with cheaper components manufactured from steel."

Soooo, no supercharger on the meteor.

I also remember that the meteors were a different color. I need to look around a little harder before I shoot my mouth off.

I also found this,

That being said, I still think it is somewhat disingenuous the way it is being sold

Folks at Flypaste believe it's a Mk II...for a Hurricane.

OP, what is happening to Wix guys today, you are about the 4th one to say you might have been mistaken about somethig. Don't you know a real Amerkin male never admits he's wrong about anything. Seriously I was just guessing about the tank engine without the supercharger. Interestingly about 10years ago on the way home from OSH we landed somewhere Mo,?, and were met by some factory guys who did high end metal casting. One was a Rolls engineer who said they were still making parts for tank engines. Hey, OP either way, Lanc or tank, that Merlin is always gonna sound better than that T-28.

They say it is a Merlin II or Merlin III, that is a very early engine that was indeed an aircraft engine quite likely installed in some of the previously mention airplanes. It has single piece cylinder banks among other things. If you look at the pic's, you'll see little covers that attach to the sides of the banks with 4 nuts. Those are removed and there is an apparatus inside that is dis-assembled to facilitate removal of the liners from the banks. This engine is earlier than the -1 and is not a Packard creation. The Meteor tank engine is an entirely differant animal other than it is a V-12. Originally, these engines were built using "culls" from aircraft engine assembly lines, but later on were built in their entirerty strictly as tank engines. The prototype crankcase for a Metoer engine was an aircraft case. The parts, although they do look like Merlin stuff, crank, rods & etc., they are not finished in aircraft quality. The meteor engine also turns in the opposite direction of an aircraft Merlin, crankshaft turns RH in a Meteor vs. LH in a Merlin. Meteor or Centurion tank engine parts are identified with an "FV" prefix or suffix on the part. The wheelcase, sump and back end of the Meteor is completely differant. Underneath the intake manifold on the top of the engine is a big brass carburator that runs almost full length of the intake.

According to RRHT, the Merlin III was used in the following:

Sea Hurricane, Battle, Henley, Hotspur, Hurricane, Spitfire and Defiant. The only useable parts off that engine may be some of the bigger pieces of the power section. But, bascially the engine is useable for it's current purpose, which is display.

With all the experts on this thread, can anyone identify this Merlin?

And where exactly would the data plate be located?

Looks to be 224/225. Data tag, if there, is on the side of the case FWD of the generator drive stand attached with 4 screws that are soldered in place to the data tag. It's got .420 gears & a Rotol propshaft which means it was probably in a Lancaster or like airplane.
